Bangladesh’s loss to Australia in the 43rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023, held in Pune, India yesterday, Sri Lanka’s cricket squad failed to secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Led by Kaushal Mendes, the Sri Lankan side experienced a profoundly disappointing World Cup journey, securing victories in only two of their nine matches. Additionally, reports surfaced regarding issues within their board and team off the field.
Sri Lanka currently occupies the ninth position in the World Cup points table, amassing four points and displaying a negative net run rate of -1.419, having won just two out of their nine matches.

Sri Lanka concluded their major tournament journey with a decisive loss to New Zealand in Bengaluru, following which they pinned their hopes on Australia to overcome Bangladesh and secure qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Triumph by a margin.
Australia won against Bangladesh by eight wickets. However, while pursuing a goal of 307 runs, Australia managed only 44.4 overs, failing to decrease the net run rate of Bengal Tigers.
As a result, the teams qualifying for the Champions Trophy are India, South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, Afghanistan, and England.

Alternatively, on Friday (November 10), the International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed an immediate suspension on Sri Lanka Cricket’s ICC membership.
According to a released statement, the ICC convened a meeting and concluded that Sri Lanka Cricket had seriously violated its responsibilities as a member.
