A significant number of 1,132,228 accounts in India were banned by Twitter under the leadership of Elon Musk between April 26 and May 25. Elon Musk referred to his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US, where he mentioned that a company is compelled to comply with the directives of local governments. This interaction influenced the company’s decision to take action.
Twitter Bans Over 11 Lakh Accounts in India
Under the leadership of Elon Musk, the micro-blogging platform has been undergoing significant changes. Recently, a new Twitter CEO, Linda Yaccarino, was appointed to oversee operations. During this period, Twitter also took action against 1,843 accounts in India that were involved in promoting terrorism. In total, a staggering number of 1,134,071 accounts were banned by Twitter in India during the reporting period.

In accordance with the new IT Rules, 2021, Twitter released its monthly report stating that it had received 518 user complaints from India during the same period. These complaints were received through Twitter’s grievance redressal mechanisms as part of their compliance efforts.
Furthermore, Twitter addressed 90 grievances related to account suspensions. Upon thorough review of each case, the company overturned 25 of these suspensions, taking into consideration the specific details and circumstances. However, the remaining reported accounts continue to remain suspended as per the company’s decision.

According to INP, the majority of complaints from India were related to abuse or harassment, totaling 264. This was followed by reports of hateful conduct (84), sensitive adult content (67), and defamation (51). These figures highlight the various categories of user concerns brought to Twitter’s attention from India during the specified period.
