According to Police Chief David Smith, Laura Ilg, a 31-year-old woman, made a distressing 911 call in the afternoon of June 16th, as reported by local media.
In an interview with local ABC affiliate News 5 Cleveland, Police Chief David Smith shared that Laura Ilg, who was 33 weeks pregnant, provided a harrowing account of the incident. She explained that her two-year-old child had unintentionally discharged a firearm, striking her in the back.
Following a prompt response, law enforcement officials swiftly reached the residence in Norwalk, Ohio. Laura Ilg was promptly transported to the hospital; however, despite the efforts made through an emergency cesarean section, the unborn baby could not be saved, as conveyed by Chief David Smith.
Tragically, Laura Ilg succumbed to her injuries hours later, Chief David Smith added.
In an update shared on its Facebook page, the Norwalk Police Department expressed its deepest condolences to the grieving family, friends, and everyone impacted by the heartbreaking loss of the young mother and her unborn son. The department offered sincere and heartfelt sympathies during this tragic time.
Upon the arrival of the police, Laura Ilg remained conscious and informed the officers that her son had managed to gain access to the typically secured bedroom while she was engaged in laundry duties. Chief David Smith stated that the child began playing with the firearm, leading to the tragic incident.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a Sig Sauer Micro 9mm handgun on a nightstand, accompanied by two additional loaded firearms, as revealed by Chief David Smith. Media reports indicate that Laura Ilg’s husband, who was absent during the incident, claimed ownership of the firearms.
