Nowadays, billions of individuals globally access the Internet, requiring them to select passwords for various purposes such as email and social media accounts.
Surprisingly, a majority of individuals continue to employ passwords that are easily guessable, even by children.
Indeed, cybersecurity professionals have unveiled a compilation of the most commonly used or weakest passwords of 2023, and it is quite remarkable.
This compilation has been disclosed by a company named NordPass.
To achieve this, the company examined the roster of compromised passwords within 4.3 terabytes of data accessible on the dark web.
Top 20 Passwords of 2023
As per this roster, 123456 stands out as the most commonly used password.
If this happens to be your preferred password as well, be aware that it has consistently held the ‘distinction’ of being the most prevalent or weakest password on certain company lists for a decade.
Similarly, admin secured the second position, while 12345678 claimed the third spot.
123456789 and 1234 occupied the 4th and 5th positions, respectively.
1234 held the sixth spot, password ranked seventh, and 1234 was deemed the eighth weakest password.
Aa123456 secured the 9th position in the category, while 1234567890 claimed the 10th spot as the most popular password.
UNKNOWN landed at number 11, followed by 1234567 and 123123 at positions 12 and 13, respectively.
Passwords 111111, password, 12345678910, 000000, admin123, ********, and user ranked 14th to 20th as the worst passwords, respectively.
The company reported that cracking 18 of the top 20 passwords takes only a second.

Remember, each online account should have a unique password, and it’s advisable to make it as challenging as possible.
Certainly, technology firms are dedicating substantial efforts to explore alternatives to passwords, but it will require some time for these technologies to become accessible.
