Virat Kohli of India notched up his 50th century in one-day internationals, propelling the undefeated hosts to a total of 397 runs for four wickets against New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.
Kohli’s innings of 117, completed in 113 deliveries, secured him the record for the highest number of centuries in the 50-over format, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar. The Indian batting legend was in the stands to applaud the achievement.
Having swiftly run two off fast bowler Lockie Ferguson to reach his century, Kohli removed his helmet and gestured towards the stands where Tendulkar and former England soccer captain David Beckham were seen standing and clapping in appreciation.
The 35-year-old cricketer struck nine fours and two sixes before getting caught in the deep off fast bowler Tim Southee, who claimed three wickets for 100 runs.

Shreyas Iyer’s explosive innings of 105, delivered in just 70 balls and adorned with four fours and eight sixes, added a spectacular finish to India’s batting.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, who contributed 47 runs, won the toss and chose to bat, providing the hosts with a lively start alongside Shubman Gill in a 71-run opening partnership.
Gill had to temporarily retire due to leg cramps but later returned to the crease, finishing unbeaten on 80.
India set New Zealand a target of 398 runs to win
The venue, where India secured their last 50-over World Cup title, has hosted four day-night matches in the tournament, with three of them won by the team batting first. Australia was the only team to win while chasing at this ground, thanks to Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten double century.
India has been formidable throughout, winning all nine round-robin matches, including a four-wicket victory over the Black Caps in Dharamsala. However, New Zealand had defeated India at the same stage in the 2019 edition.
The second semi-final between Australia and South Africa is scheduled at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, with the final set to take place on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
