ICC Announces Equal Prize Money for Men’s and Women’s Mega Events. In a groundbreaking move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has declared that men’s and women’s teams will receive equal prize money at ICC events. This historic decision was reached at the ICC Annual Conference in Durban, South Africa, surpassing the predetermined timeline for achieving prize money parity by 2030.
Under the new policy, teams will be awarded equal prize money based on their finishing positions at comparable events. Additionally, the victorious teams will receive the same amount for winning matches at these events, irrespective of gender.
ICC Chairman Greg Barclay expressed his delight, stating, “This marks a significant moment in the history of our sport. It’s truly gratifying to see men’s and women’s cricketers competing at ICC global events being rewarded equally. Since 2017, we have consistently increased prize money at women’s events, prioritizing the goal of attaining equal prize money. Henceforth, winning the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, T20 World Cups, and U19s will carry the same prestige and reward as their male counterparts.”

This commitment to gender equality in cricket has led to substantial improvements in prize money. For instance, the winners and runners-up at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 and 2023 respectively received five times the amount offered in 2018, with $1 million and $500,000 respectively. Moreover, the prize money for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2022 increased to $3.5 million from the $2 million awarded for winning the 2017 edition in England.
Notably, this decision not only benefits the teams but also provides increased funding for each member of the ICC. This boost in financial support is made possible through the implementation of a strategic investment fund dedicated to promoting global growth initiatives in line with the ICC Global Growth Strategy. ICC Chairman Greg Barclay emphasized the significance of this development, saying, “Our robust media rights and commercial program for the upcoming four-year cycle enables us to invest more money than ever before into our beloved sport. All ICC Members will receive a base distribution, and additional revenue will be allocated based on their contributions to the global game, both on and off the field. This unparalleled investment in cricket presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for our Members to accelerate growth, engage more players and fans, and foster competitiveness.”

In addition to the financial benefits, the ICC is extending support to member nations to establish sustainable revenue streams and cultivate the game further. Moving forward, upcoming events will require a minimum of seven local players or Associate Member players. The organizing Member will also pay a solidarity fee to the Home Board of the respective player, solidifying the commitment to strengthening cricket at all levels.
