The British government has started issuing new banknotes bearing the image of King Charles.

According to the British National Broadcasting Corporation, the new notes are being issued to replace damaged notes, and will gradually be issued in larger numbers when demand arises.

King Charles is the second monarch in British history to appear on these notes, with Queen Elizabeth starting the tradition in 1960. According to reports, shoppers can still use the current £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes. Among them is the portrait of the late queen.
According to the agency, the first new notes printed last year featured a photo of King Charles taken in 2013. Announcing the new notes, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said it was a historic moment.

Current polymer Bank of England banknotes still have the same image on the reverse, with Sirenston Churchill, Jane Austen, JMW Turner, and Alan Turing in ascending order. Notes issued in Scotland and Northern Ireland have images other than those of the monarch.
